Thom Lion announces EP release
After the success of his recent singles Mess at Best and Fire Escape Adelaide musician Thom Lion is now announcing the Friday 29th July release of his EP Sleep Riots alongside a national tour. The EP is full of Thom Lion’s fiery production, piano filled choruses, and gorgeous vocals we’ve come to expect with influences like Arcade Fire, Cold War Kids and Fleetwood Mac.
After self producing most of his previous work, Thom Lion decided to team up with with legendary producer John Castle (Vance Joy, Josh Pyke) at The Shed Studios in Melbourne for this release. In doing so Thom was able to focus more on his music and not worry about what was going on behind the desk.
"All I knew is I wanted the EP to sound full of engaging emotion yet energetic and catchy for the most part. Seeing some of John Castle’s work in the past I was comfortable to have him leave as big a fingerprint on the songs as possible, and he did. He really shaped the sound, helped out with the right synth bits and crafting the EP in general. He is an incredible producer." - Thom Lion.
After tracking most of the EP over a week’s session in Melbourne, Thom then took the recordings to his home studio in Adelaide to make some adjustments. - "After my first session with John I took the rough mixes home and sat on them for a few months. Eventually I decided to scrap all my vocal takes and re-record them in my home studio as I felt the emotional texture wasn’t quiet right. I then went back to Melbourne for another few days of overdubs and mixing with John to finish the EP."
The EP showcases a collection of well-crafted songs that are engaging, emotive and full of catchy hooks. Take a listen too the pre-release stream ahead of its Friday 29th July release below and catch Thom Lion performing with his band The Tamers in Adelaide for the EP launch show at Jive at the end of July.
