The Jezabels - Adelaide, 2nd June 2012
Words: Rob Lyon
The rise and rise of Sydney band The Jezabels continues as they step up and play some biggest shows of their career on their latest tour taking in all the major capitals including the infamous Thebarton Theatre in downtown Adelaide. The last time The Jezabels played this grand venue was supporting Tegan & Sara in 2010, but now they’re headlining in their own right.
No doubt this show will go down as one of the best for 2012. With two great support acts vying for attention from punters escaping the punishing cold wintery night you can’t go wrong. Up first was Triple J Unearthed Winners Snakadaktal who continue to build a strong following, whilst Canadian outfight Lights, who are massive in their homeland but relatively unknown here, were presented with a prime opportunity to win some new fans.
The indie kids love Snakadaktal and plenty more punters will be following this band after this performance. To be fair though, most probably didn’t know to much about these guys, but the song that seemed to resonate the most was Air. With only one EP to their credit they had plenty in the armoury to play out a tight kit arse set.
Hearing something new was the general gist of Canadian band Lights who were aiming to make an impression with the strong crowd starting to build for the main act. Valerie Poxleitner is essentially the centre of the universe for this band who impressed the growing crowd with their brand of electro-pop. Siberia and Toes were stand outs in a set that seemed quite ‘beige’ and bland to say the least. It was definitely like hurry up and get The Jezabels on.

The excitement was almost fever pitch in the minutes leading up to The Jezabels and as the finishing touches were put together for their stage get up, it was hard for punters not to get a little bit revved up and a tad excited - the room literally became electric.
Eventually the instrumental track Austerlitz set The Thebbie a buzz and the band strolled out through the three metal arches assembled on stage. The excitement was palpable as the band opened with Endless Summer, which indeed set the tone for what was to come. Hayley Mary oozed sex with her skin-tight body hugging lycra body stocking. Her performance, like that of the rest of the band, was virtually flawless, leaving even the most cynical in utter awe.
Holding the attention of the crowd in the palm of her hand, Hayley Mary paced across the stage, throwing and contorting her body, feeling every note the band was playing. Their set list was unbeatable with the likes of Rosebud and Mace Spray proving memorable but the video projections during Easy To Love made this one worthy of the highlights reel. Trycolour and Dark Storm went down a treat and with a discography boasting three EP’s and a killer debut album Prisoner there’s definitely an abundance of riches to choose from.
Returning for an encore, the band finished in a blaze of glory playing a Peace Of Mind and wrapping things up with Hurt Me, complete with Hayley May jumping in to the crowd from on top of a roadies shoulder, giving punters one last chance to get up close and personal.
An awesome night and no doubt we’ll be hearing a lot more from The Jezabels as they continue to conquer the world.
