The Floors
Words: Caught in the Mosh

After a three day recording process around a year ago, Perth trio The Floors are in the final stages of readying their debut album. Described as musicians who live to create a living sound that’s “Beautiful, ugly, imperfect and yet (somehow) flawless”, their approach is influenced by a spiritual approach of rhythm & blues that’s “un-fucked” with the means of computers and radio formulas – it’s just three musicians in a room (or sharing a stage), making music – nothing more and nothing less.
Having just embarked on a round of dates taking in the east coast of the country, Caught in the Mosh got the chance to pick Luke Dux’s brain about all things The Floors.
How long have you been playing together for and how did the band initially come about?
Ryan and I have been playing together since we were big enough to hold an instrument. We have always called ourselves the Floors. The name fits any direction we want to take it. We’ve been playing together with this current line up for about 3 years now.
How would you describe your music to anyone who hasn’t heard you recorded or seen you live yet?
“Someone throwing a huge porterhouse steak against a brick wall”- Todd Picket (Kill Devil Hills, Various other bands).
* Note : Our Singer’s a vegetarian.

Who are the players in The Floors and what respective roles do you play within the band?
There’s :
Luke Dux - Throat and Guitar. Likes Whiskey and Captain Beefheart.
Ryan Dux - Plays Bass Guitar and occasionally yells into a microphone. Enjoys blowing up Bass Amps and Neil Young.
Ashley Doodkorte - Hit’s things and just revealed to us his angelic voice. He likes 90’s Metal Music and does all our Artwork… He’s banned from the CD player in the Tour van…

How was the recording process for the new album conducted & generally how would you say the it turned out?
We set up in a room at Poon’s Head Studio’s in Fremantle, pointed microphones at our amplifiers and made noise for 3 days. We wanted to capture the vibe of us three in a room feeding off each other. We weren’t aiming for perfection; I think we got that.
What is the process for The Floors to create and write music?
We lock ourselves in a room and jam for hours until something sticks. If it makes you want to get down and move then we go with it. I have tapes and tapes of ideas, so once we get a groove, I’ll go through them until I find something that works.
What are your inspirations?
The Cramps - Live at Napa State Mental Hospital.

How did your very distinctive sound come about? Was it something you were striving for or was it just something that naturally happened?
I think most of our sound comes from Ryan on Bass Guitar. Being a 3 piece we’ve got to fill in all the gaps so the Bass Guitar generally takes care of the parts a rhythm guitar would. Then I just make noise over the Top. Ash holds us together. Without him it would be Chaos. With him it’s organized chaos.
What makes The Floors such a strong live band and how do you strive to capture that same or similar feeling / approach on record?
Our Amplifiers are generally louder and bigger than most. The record is us playing Live, we just tuned our guitars more often.
What are your goals for the rest of 2012? What can we expect from you guys for the rest of the year and beyond?
We plan on setting this Record free. 3 Days to record and a year to release. We’re a slow moving machine but hopefully another Eastern States tour towards the end of this year. We’ve just come back from touring up North in WA. A lot of Perth Bands seem to head down South but never North. It’s hot up there. We like the heat.
Is being conscious of un-fucking with computers and creating living sound that’s beautiful, ugly, imperfect and yet flawless derivative of your own inspirations and like minded artists you admire? Or is it simply that you are sick of hearing over auto-tuned trash on the radio and are trying to make a stand against it?
I think using computers to makes music has its place and it’s something we’ve all dabbled in, but it doesn’t work for the Floors. Rock n Roll is supposed to be raw and ugly. If you want to sound slick and tight then rehearse. I don’t own a radio.
