The Rubens w/- Oh Mercy - Perth, 5th May 2013
Words: Todd Lockley
The Sunday sessioners of Perth were blessed with a double bill of awesome sounds this weekend past. Capitol filled early before anyone had made the stage, overtaking the bars and merch sound. Hip hop was played between spots to the amusement of drunken fans bouncing to the bassy beats.
Oh Mercy were welcomed by the entire sold out audience; it seemed everyone decided to get their position nice and early. They played a solid set full of songs that sounded familiar to the ear of anyone tuned into JJJ throughout the day. What would be a common occurrence was The Rubens coming onstage before time to help Oh Mercy finish their set - rock 'n' roll! Oh Mercy were a really great support act - well worth checking into next time they're in town
Swirls of pretty purple and pink light spiraled over the capacity Capitol crowd as The Rubens waltzed back out onstage, armed with instruments and a bevy of awe inspiring swagger fit to send women to frenzy and men into uncontrollable sing song. Maybe a little vise versa for good measure.
Launching into The Day You Went Away and Be Gone, the intentions were set out early; good times and much liquor were the tonic as the over zealous bouncers escorted many punters out before the intros were finalized. "How the fuck are ya?" asked Sam Margin, one of the three Margin brothers that make up the Rubens - also of course Scott Baldwin on drums, and tonight and extra player hiding in the shadows.

The biggest surprise was the airing of fan favorite Elvis early in the set. It was magical! The band had the audience hanging on every word and lovers embraced and sung the chorus to one another. Paddy showed off the Orbison-esque guitar work of Zaac Margin with that familiar Big O sound. Two massive highlights of the evening - such beautiful songs to enjoy on a Sunday evening.
Lay It Down had everyone howling along to the blues heavy chorus. The Rubens stage show might not involve a lot of spectacle, but who really needs that when there's an arsenal of awesome tracks and the effervescent coolness that bubbles throughout their shows.
As the encore came to the light, Sam took to the keys to burst out a glorious rendition of Never Be The Same. Then, once again, the members of Oh Mercy and The Rubens were together to tackle the only song left to rock out, My Gun and it was glorious. As people flooded out of the sweaty and hot as hell Capitol, they could only speak of how truly awesome a rock experience the night was. Cant wait til next time.
