Lanie Lane - Adelaide, 11th May 2012
Words: Jo Taylor
Sydneyʼs Lanie Lane kicked off her 14 date Bangity Bang national tour with a sold out gig at The Governor Hindmarsh. What better way for the music lovers of Adelaide to enjoy a Friday night? The packed crowd looked like they were ready to let loose in style.
As her band took to the stage first and started warming up the crowd, Lanie appeared last and seemed just as thrilled to be there. Soon they were launching into What Do I Do and that voice which oozes with a smooth country-blues drawl confirmed her place as one of Australiaʼs best upcoming talents.
Lanie Lane has gained a strong following since winning a slot at the Sydney Big Day Out in 2011 thanks to Triple Jʼs Unearthed competition. Clearly in this time she has learnt a lot and she has honed her skills in songwriting, showcasing her sublime first album release To The Horses.
Like Me Meaner was played with a great reggae beat and Lanie Lane showed off her vocal versatility. Her three piece band comprising of Zoe Hauptman on double bass and ukelele, Aidan Roberts on electric guitar and Paul Derricott on drums and percussion produced a tight sound.

Betty Baby was a highlight with an infectious rockabilly feel to it, combined with her sweet
vocals that got the crowd dancing and swinging around. Lanie fed off the energy when she
commented “I can feel the love in the room! Youʼre all on a mission, you all want to dance!”
The mood was continued with lush The Devilʼs Sake.
“I love this room! Whatʼs this street called?” she enquired. After many yells of Port Rd and
cupping her ear to hear she laughed “I canʼt understand what any of you are saying”.
Hopefully she found out later, but surerly it didnʼt matter. She had the audience in the
palm of her hand.
Next the crowd was treated to a cover of The Black Keys track Gold on the Ceiling, which she did in spectacular fashion and raised the energy levels in the room even further. This night was heating up for a cold Autumn night!
Taking it down a little with sexy, dark tune My Man was another highlight. Showing a simple song with effective minimal layering can be just as hypnotic as the most orchestrated of songs and the simple lighting and stage spattered with lamps really gave the song atmosphere. Followed by the sweet ukelele lullaby Heartbeat and guitar driven country tune To The Horses. “I felt a few tears” she laughed quietly at herself.

Jungle Man got the beats going again with itʼs funky grooves and the fuzz bass of Ainʼt Hungry. Everyone was high energy again and more than a few swing dancers were spotted.
Next highlight was the exceptionally named Oh Well Thatʼs What You Get Falling In Love With A Cowboy. The song has a catchy groove and a colossal country-blues feel to it. Surely more than a few people woke up with this song swimming through their minds the next day!
The set ended with bluegrass country tune Bang Bang. Lanie lane clearly loves what she does and her natural sweet demeanor endears her to the audience. As she departed the stage by blowing kisses and a cheerful thankyou thrown out to the masses, it was no surprise when there were calls for more.
She returned solo for the heartbreaking acoustic What Trouble Is. A fine example of just how far her distinctive vocals can carry a song. The band returned and the night was ended with the swinging Donʼt Cry, which allowed each band member a solo to showcase their own talents and the appreciative crowds energy was uncontainable!
It was a spectacular night and another example of the talent streaming out of this country right now, getting support they so richly deserve and need.
