Jay and Silent Bob Get Old - Adelaide, 28th April 2012
Words: Kristy Delaine
After a string of sold out shows around the country, Jay and Silent Bob Get Old rolled in to Adelaide for the final stop of the tour. Adelaide usually misses out on big name shows but not this time and it seemed that Kevin Smith and co had saved the best til last. The Thebarton Theatre became the setting for a special double event, not only did we see Jay and Silent Bob Get Old but also a special SModcast as a support act. Scott Mosier had flown in from L.A. exclusively for the show which was broadcast live across the globe via the SModcast website.
It’s hard to explain to someone that you are going to a spend an evening in a capacity filled theatre to simply watch two men on stage who are sitting in front of computers, reading tweets and talking about blow jobs. It’s even harder to explain to someone how thoroughly entertaining that this can be.
Right from the start of the evening Smith was happy to tell everyone that he was very stoned and had every intention to continue being stoned for the rest of the night. It's doubtful that he was the only one in the theatre with this affliction.
The SModcast got the night off to a great start, setting a relaxing mood as Smith warned the crowd that they’d be in for 3 hours of listening to a fat guy talk. They discussed many topics including Adelaide’s murderous history, Smiths fear of Aussie men, weed and the top 30 Aussie sayings. All the while Smith used his bad Aussie accent to remind us how stoned he was and how good the weed is in scary old Adelaide. Smith and Mosier work well together, they’ve been doing these SModcasts for seven years now so they have established a good ebb and flow. Smith does most of the talking but Mosier can hold his own with his quick wit and clever remarks, he also produced a much better Aussie accent then Smith. Together they create a seamless, entertaining, thought provoking and stoned conversation about nothing.

In true stoner style the topics discussed ranged greatly and went from normal to weird with in minutes. Each train of thought went spiralling off on all possible tangents before getting back to the point as we learnt many interesting, but useless and strange, things along the way. One minute they were discussing Harry Potter character Peter Pettigrew and the next moment everyone was picturing a mid coital Smith with his dogs nose in his arse as she morphed into Bruce Willis.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing to come out of the discussion was Kevin Smith finally learning that your “short and curlies” are not in fact on your head as his mother had led him to believe. It was nice to be in the room for such a momentous occasion.
After a short intermission, just enough time for Smith to enjoy some local produce, the audience braced themselves for their first glimpse of Jason Mewes.
Even though Smith made it clear that the audience should not expect to be seeing Jay and Silent Bob on stage there are still a lot of similarities between the real life version and the fictitious characters.
While Smith didn’t have his trench coat on and is anything but “silent” it was very easy to picture him as that character. Jason Mewes on the other hand, seems almost exactly like the fictitious version of himself and you are left wondering where the separation of the two actually comes in.
The audience was clearly excited and very responsive as Mewes appeared on stage, he too appeared enthusiastic and it didn’t take long before he was flashing his arse and simulating oral sex on the microphone. Clearly not content with only describing his sordid tales, he continued to act out the scenes as he told them. Some times he even used props as he showed us how he intended to use the didgeridoo as a “fuck snorkel”.

Mewes also provided some insightful stories from his past. The first was a random sex story, which left nothing to the imagination and the second was a story of caution with regard to taking drugs.
Ultimately, Smith explained that the show is basically a public intervention for Mewes to “keep him off the demon drug”. So when Jason had finished listing all the things he’s tried to fuck or get his wife to suck, it perhaps seemed worth it to hear the guy say he’s been sober for 2 years and 31 days.
The evening was rounded out with a customary game of “Let Us Fuck”, a game invented by Mewes where he invites audience members onstage to act out unusual sexual positions. While it was amusing it seemed as though it was just another excuse for Jason to simulate masturbating and giving head, which truth be told, is the best and only way to keep him off heroin.
One could be excused for thinking that the Jay and Silent Bob tour may have been a cash grab for Mewes but it was also a fantastic insight in to Kevin Smiths world. The audience was lucky enough to see two different sides of the great man tonight. While he is always funny, smart, charismatic, stoned and chatty, they saw the more intellectually funny side as he was able to banter with ease alongside Mosier. Then the more puerile and smutty side when joined by Mewes.
If nothing else, tonight was a great opportunity to be in the same room as a Hollywood heavy hitter, and if you missed the show this time round then you don’t have long to wait as they announced that they will return to Australia in February 2013.
