Dune Rats - Triple J 2012 Big Day Out winners - Brisbane

Having only been around for a year, Brisbane band Dune Rats are certainly making a name for themselves. With two EP’s under their belt and an album in the works for 2012, the surf-pop duo consisting of Danny Beusa and BC Deusa have been working themselves to the bone through 2011.
From playing shows with the likes of The Vines, The Grates and a bunch of other “rad people” including Bleeding Knees Club and DZ Deathrays, to their inclusion as Triple J Unearthed Winners on the Brisbane leg of the 2012 Big Day Out, it seems the future’s bright for the Dune Rats.

How do you see winning the Unearthed Competition and gaining the opportunity to play at the BDO affecting your band in the short term and long term?
Short term we are just going to be stoked to play at a festival that is outside and in daylight hours. Long term… as fucking lame as it sounds we don’t plan too far ahead, so put out an album and tour more…maybe more people will know about it because of the bigger shows.
What are your thoughts on gaining exposure as an new band?
Its fucking hard, we have a lot of mates all in the same position and we help each other out because quite frankly the music industry is filled with c**ts who are looking out for themselves and a pay day. So yeah… doing things your way and still trying to make it is tough.

What inspires you as a musician?
Weed. Other bands. There are too many good ones and hardly any get enough credit so it just makes us want to take anything good we get and keep pushing it.
What are your thoughts on file sharing and the digital methods in which music is distributed these days? How does this affect you now, and how do you think it will affect you in the future?
We aren’t too tech savy man… so im gonna take that as people stealing music? if someone wants our music, and doesn’t want to pay, then I ain’t stressing about it. If they want to pay, unlike someone on a major label, most of the bones go to us. So it really is just up to who has the dollars at the time and our mates who come to shows and pay entry is enough for us.
Who are you most looking forward to seeing at the Big Day Out 2012?
OFWAFTA – We’d like to shake their hands but watching them will be enough haha
What can punters expect from your BDO show?
Three people on stage, maybe a trampoline (for real) and some booze getting thrown out to the hard working people in the front (and maybe only) row…
