Brightly's One For Sorrow, Two For Joy
Once in a while a creative presence arrives that is so unique, its impossible to resist its inspirational maelstrom. Charlie Gleason (aka Brightly) is that brand of artist. The London-based electronic musician, programmer, and computer science dropout will unveil third LP
Recorded in an isolated cabin in the depths of an Icelandic winter and completed in London, the dynamics of One For Sorrow, Two For Joy are equally icy and cosy. Intimate and vast. Skittering rhythms, endless delays and rolling crescendos. Gleason recalls, “I was training for the London marathon at the time (never again) and ended up running in snowstorms on beaches with black sand, surrounded by glaciers. It was pretty wild, pretty inspiring, and one time when I got a bit turned around, pretty terrifying.”
Brightly has imagined a deeply dreamy, charmingly restless LP that pops and clicks with a fascinating balance of sorrow and joy. Twelve tracks construct an ocean of sounds, where electronic and folkish tendencies coalesce, running like veins between live instrumentation, snug synths and Gleason’s distinctly heartbreaking, crackling baritone. Fellow electronic wunderkind, Grammy nominated Melbourne producer par excellence Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Hiatus Kaiyote, Japanese Wallpaper) brightened the Brightly sounds, mixing and mastering the masterpiece. A successful Kickstarter campaign means the record will see the physical world in the form of a handsome clear vinyl release.
Gleason melds Brightly’s musical and online presences as seamlessly as he traverses genres. His spirit of invention has garnered adoring attention from blogs worldwide, and the likes of NME and Tone Deaf. Single Rugby boasts an astounding, unique GIF-powered music video. It is as mesmerising as the track, and follows equally entrancing videos for I Will Never Let You Go and the Twitter-powered Preflight Nerves, which won a bunch of awards, clocked half million views, and was featured by Google’s Creative Sandbox.
Brightly has conjured a series of stunning sad songs that you can probably dance to. A collaborative, exciting slice of internationally constructed modern electronic pop. Listen in.
